The Ogoni Youth Federation (OYF) has issued a 24-hour ultimatum to security agencies to identify, apprehend, and prosecute those responsible for a foiled assassination attempt on His Royal Majesty, Mene Baridam, the revered Monarch of Bangah Kingdom.
The details in the statement shared to New Daily Prime revealed that the incident occurred on Sunday, and has been condemned as a brazen assault on the monarch and the dignity of Ogoniland.
Speaking on behalf of the Ogoni youth, Engr. Legborsi Yamaabana, President-General of OYF and Spokesman of the Niger Delta Ethnic Nationalities Youth Leaders Forum, described the incident as “unacceptable, provocative, and a dangerous descent into lawlessness.”
The Federation President-General recalled that His Majesty had narrowly escaped a similar assassination attempt in late 2025.
“We are alarmed and enraged that a monarch who has devoted his life to peace, development, and unity in Ogoni is now being hunted like prey,” Yamaabana said. “Do these attackers have no regard for the sacred stool of our ancestors? Have we lost all sense of values?.”
The Federation warned that Ogoni youths will not tolerate the systematic targeting of traditional institutions, and demanded immediate and decisive action from security authorities.
Failure to meet the 24-hour deadline, the youth leaders said, will compel them to peacefully mobilise to demand justice.
In the document signed by Hycienth Ana, SSA Media and Communications to OYF also urged the Rivers State Government and security agencies to urgently strengthen protection around the monarch.
further details indicated that his increasing national relevance and recent appointment as Chairman of the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers’ Mediation Team may have made him a target.
The Council plays a key role in resolving political tensions between the Executive and Legislative arms of the state government.
The Federation concluded by praying for the monarch’s safety and speedy recovery, stressing that the attack must not be swept under the carpet. “Ogoni must not become a killing field. Justice must be served—swiftly and transparently,” the statement added.
