The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has assured that all corps members are covered by a “comprehensive” insurance policy.
He gave this assurance in Abuja during a visit from the Director-General of the Voice of Nigeria (VON), Mallam Jibrin Ndace.
Nafiu explained that the federal government has set up strong welfare measures to keep every participant safe.
This package includes both life insurance and medical care. He noted that this protection begins the moment a person receives their call-up letter, even before they leave their home to start their journey.
He said, “From the moment call-up letters are issued–before they even begin their journey from their parents’ homes–they are already covered by insurance.”
Nafiu also stated that the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) handles the medical needs of corps members whenever they fall ill.
He further revealed that the scheme steps in to pay for special cases that regular health insurance might not cover.
To show how the scheme helps, two specific examples were shared:
The NYSC paid N28 million to save the life of a pregnant corps member who suffered a spinal cord injury in a road accident.
The scheme also spent N33 million to provide prosthetic arms for another corps member who was injured while traveling to his place of primary assignment.
Nafiu also clarified that the NYSC does not send youth to unsafe areas.
He urged journalists to always verify their facts with the NYSC before publishing reports to avoid spreading wrong information.
He maintained that the scheme remains neutral in politics and religion to help keep the country united.
