Less than 24 hours after her defeat in the bid to succeed her late husband, Senator representing Anambra North Senatorial Zone, Tony Nwoye, has appointed Justina Azuka, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate, as his Senior Special Adviser on Special Duties.
Mrs Azuka had contested the by-election for the Onitsha North 1 State Constituency, a seat previously held by her late husband, Justice Azuka, who was tragically kidnapped and killed. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) candidate, Mimih Ifeoma Azikiwe, the winner, with Mrs Azuka finishing a close second.
According to sources, the decision to field Mrs Azuka as the ADC candidate was initially intended to empower her to support her three children following the loss of her husband. Although she was unsuccessful in the election, Senator Nwoye promptly appointed her to a legislative role to provide support and stability.
A photo circulating online shows Senator Nwoye handing Mrs Azuka her appointment letter. When contacted, the senator confirmed the appointment.
The position comes with a monthly salary of N200,000, a gesture applauded by many who see it as a compassionate response to her difficult circumstances.
Peter Mmeagana, an indigene of Anambra State, praised Senator Nwoye’s empathy, saying: “What Tony Nwoye has done is the empathy which many politicians in Nigeria lack. The idea of fielding her to replace her husband was the best, but you see how vehemently opposition came after the poor widow. At least with what she has now, she can keep her family.”
The appointment is widely viewed as a supportive measure to cushion the impact of her loss and help provide for her family.
