The National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, announced today that the Federal Government is conducting a thorough investigation into the Gulf of Guinea (GoG) as a critical route for arms trafficking into Nigeria.
This revelation underscores ongoing concerns regarding the influx of illegal weapons that contribute to rising insecurity in the country.
During a press briefing, Ribadu outlined the strategic importance of the Gulf of Guinea, noting that its vast maritime expanse has become a hotspot for various forms of criminal activities, including arms smuggling.
He stated, “The Federal Government is keenly aware of the challenges posed by illicit arms trafficking, which poses a direct threat to our national security and stability.”
Ribadu elaborated on the collaborative efforts between security agencies and international partners to monitor and intercept trafficking activities.
He emphasised the need for enhanced surveillance and intelligence sharing in the region to effectively combat this pressing issue.
The NSA also highlighted recent incidents that demonstrate the impact of arms trafficking on violence and organized crime within Nigeria.
He cited statistics indicating a rise in armed conflict and violent crimes linked to the availability of illegal firearms, which have exacerbated the security situation across various states.
In response to these challenges, the government is not only focusing on maritime security but is also implementing comprehensive strategies to address land-based arms trafficking. Ribadu reiterated the commitment of the Federal Government to bolster the capacity of law enforcement agencies, ensuring they are well-equipped to tackle the sophisticated networks involved in arms smuggling.
The investigation into the Gulf of Guinea forms part of a broader initiative to strengthen national security and restore peace in affected regions.
Ribadu assured citizens that the government is prioritizing their safety and is determined to take decisive action against those who threaten public security.
As the investigation unfolds, further updates are expected on the measures being taken to address the complex issue of arms trafficking and its implications for Nigeria’s stability.
