The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced the dismissal of Police Inspector Ozonwanji, alleged to be connected to the murder of Ogene musician Chikezie Okezie Nwamba.
Recalled that on Saturday, the police spokesperson, Daniel Ndukwe noted that the incident occurred around 8:10 p.m. on Friday, October 25, 2024, at the Tactical Squad’s Headquarters when the victim was leaving the Squad’s Headquarters after a friendly visit.
This was contained in a statement shared via the police social media page on Monday, stating that the dismissed inspector was found culpable and faced the maximum penalty of dismissal following a court prosecution, in line with the Police Act and Regulations 2020.
The statement read, “Accordingly, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 13 (covering Anambra and Enugu States’ Commands), approved the orderly trial recommendations to dismiss and prosecute the Inspector in court.”
“Hence, he has therefore been dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force and was arraigned today, October 28, 2024, at the Enugu East Magistrate Court for the offence of murder.”
“The Chief Magistrate ordered the remand of the former officer in the Enugu Correctional Custodial Centre and the transmission of the case file to the Attorney General of Enugu State for further judicial action.”
However, November 12 was scheduled for the trial.
While expressing gratitude to the government, the people of Enugu State, and the public for their support, Commissioner of Police Kanayo Uzuegbu extended condolences to the deceased’s family.
CP Kanayo assured the command’s commitment, under his leadership, to hold all officers found guilty accountable for their actions.
