Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has sought to calm public apprehension regarding the rising water level at Alau Dam.
During a recent inspection of the ongoing reconstruction at the dam, he assured residents of Maiduguri that there is no immediate cause for concern.
Following a period of heavy rainfall, fears of potential flooding in the state capital have been growing.

Zulum acknowledged the widespread anxiety among residents but stated that current assessments by engineers indicate the situation is under control.
He explained that new water channels have been opened to alleviate pressure on the dam, which has resulted in the water level dropping by approximately four inches in recent days.
“Based on the engineering knowledge we have, we concluded that there is no cause for alarm,” the governor said, while also cautioning that the situation would be continuously monitored.
In addition to addressing the dam’s condition, Zulum used the opportunity to call on residents to be more proactive in flood prevention.
He specifically warned against building on waterways and urged residents in flood-prone areas to ensure that drainage systems in front of their homes are regularly cleared.
Looking ahead, Zulum announced that the state government plans to review the city’s master plan to address and correct urban planning issues that could worsen flooding.

He stated that the government must enforce environmental standards, no matter how difficult, to ensure all waterways are clear and functional.
Regarding the progress of work on the dam, the governor attributed some of the delays to technical procedures but assured the public that contractors are now fully on site and committed to the project.
