The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has warned against a new version of banking malware, Grandoreiro, that is targeting bank users globally.
According to the agency, the banking Trojan is primarily distributed through phishing emails and fake websites.
NITDA issued the warning on Monday via a statement seen by NEW DAILY PRIME.
NITDA said, “A new version of the banking malware, Grandoreiro has emerged, targeting users globally. This banking Trojan is primarily distributed through phishing emails and fake websites. It tricks victims into downloading malware disguised as legitimate software updates or documents.
“Grandoreiro uses advanced techniques, including screen overlay attacks and remote device control, to steal sensitive information such as banking credentials and personal data.
“The Grandoreiro malware poses significant risks such as unauthorized access to online banking accounts, theft of sensi ‘ financial information and personal data, remote exploitation of victim devices, allowing attackers to bypass security controls, potential. financial losses for individuals and businesses.”
On how to protect Nigerian banking population, NITDA advised users not to click on links or open attachments from unknown or unsolicited emails.
It urged users to only download software updates or documents from official and trusted sources.
NITDA added, “Use Multifactor Authentication (MFA) to protect online banking and financial accounts from unauthorized access. Keep antivirus and anti-malware software up to date and perform regular scans.
“Avoid conducting financial transactions over public Wi-Fi networks; use a VPN if necessary. Monitor banking activity frequently to detect and report unauthorized transactions promptly.”
