Nigerians have taken to social media to criticize the utterances of the Delta State Police Command Spokesperson Edafe Bright amidst the Ozoro alleged rape festival, calls for reprehension.
In an Edafe tweet, which allegedly depicts vague words, he questioned an X user, Rinu Oduala, with his response, stating, “Whenever I issue any statement, it turns you on. Why if I may ask.”
This came after the X user, Oduala urged the Force spokespersons, Bright to act urgently by bringing the papetrators to face the law instead of issuing statements.
Earlier, New Daily Prime reported that women in the Oruamudhu community, Ozoro, in Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State faced sexual assault after multiple videos allegedly showed some women being dragged.
This development has raised several mixed reactions as most users call for word clarity.
Edwin Ewy Ochojila expressed his disbelief on the Force spokesperson response, stating that, “A case of sexual assault occurred. You issued a statement as a police image maker. Your statement did not satisfactorily address the concerns of members of the public. They made it an issue and all you think of is to sexualise their concerns? You do not deserve to be a police officer let alone an image maker of the Police.
He further wrote, “How can you be this insensitive and unprofessional particularly when a sensitive matter like this is in issue? People have valid reasons to feel concerned and all you think of is to sexualise their concerns?
Adeola Ignition described Bright statement as “goofed” said, “Are you kidding me bro? A r@pe concern was raised. Rinu’s response to you may have been emotional coz she’s a concerned woman, and your response was a sexual innuendo? That was not the time to be witty. You really goofed.
Another user, Jerry Mejh tweeted, “This is a disappointing response from an official account. As a Public Relations Officer, your role is to provide information and maintain public trust, not to engage in inappropriate personal jabs. This kind of language only serves to diminish the dignity of the office you hold.”
Sherry Rahman wrote, “This response is not appropriate, especially given the sensitivity of the issue. It reflects a lack of proper judgment and professionalism. Were you not given any PR training? At this point, stepping down would be the responsible course of action.
For some users, they are calling for proper investigation to avoid indicting innocent citizens.
An X user, Stephen said, “…Do you expect them to just go out and start arresting people without any assurance? So they’ll end up picking up innocent people who weren’t even at the scene in the first place.”
Babatunde Azeez wrote, “I’m sure this has been going on for a very long time my question is why are they just reacting now?
