Former federal lawmaker and ex-Senator for Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, has responded to a recent statement by former President Goodluck Jonathan, in which the latter described Nigerian politics as being filled with “betrayers, liars, and traitors.”
Jonathan made the remark during the 70th birthday celebration of Chief Mike Aiyegbeni Oghiadomhe in Benin, the Edo State capital, where he reflected on the events leading up to his failed re-election bid in 2015. According to the former president, betrayal is an unfortunate hallmark of the Nigerian political landscape.
In reaction, Sani took to his X (formerly Twitter) account to echo Jonathan’s sentiments and cautioned young Nigerians with political ambitions to take note.
“GEJ just said that Nigerian politics is full of betrayers, liars and traitors. I hope young people aspiring to join politics are listening to him and learning from his experience,” he wrote.

Sani, a longstanding political commentator and former senator, highlighted Jonathan’s experience as a lesson in the harsh realities of Nigerian politics, suggesting it offers a sobering insight for future leaders.
The former president’s comments have sparked renewed debate about political loyalty and integrity in Nigeria, particularly ahead of the 2027 general elections. Jonathan is being quietly touted by some within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) as a possible presidential candidate, with political watchers speculating on a potential comeback.
While Jonathan has not publicly declared any political intentions for 2027, his growing presence at major national events and continued popularity among segments of the electorate have kept such speculations alive.
As Nigeria’s political climate continues to evolve, voices like Jonathan’s and Sani’s offer cautionary advice for a younger generation eager to reshape the system from within.
