The China Great Wall Industry Corporation (CGWIC), a Chinese aerospace company, has revealed that Nigeria owes about $11.44 million for communications satellite services.
The CGWIC sent a notice to the head of Nigeria Communications Satellite Limited (NigComSat), warning that services will be cut off if the money is not paid soon.
The notice affirmed that Nigeria owed about $11,442,335.89 as of December 31, 2025. The money is said to be for technical work like the tracking and controlling of the NigComSat-1R satellite from a ground station in China.
The Chinese company explained that it has provided these essential services for seven years without being paid.
However, it can no longer wait because of pressure from its own auditors and partners.
The company then warned that if the debt is not settled within the next month, it may turn off the satellite’s active parts.
If this happens, the company said it can no longer guarantee that the satellite will work.
NigComSat was told to inform its customers, which include broadcasting stations, internet providers, and defence communications, that their services might stop working.
In response to the news, the head of communications at NigComSat, Stephen Kwande, affirmed that the notice has been received.
He maintained that the matter is currently being examined and official response would be provided soon.
