The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has declared that content creators who film people without permission are liable to prosecution for violating the human rights of citizens.
The commission emphasised that it will now prosecute individuals who record unsuspecting members of the public and share the footage on social media.
In an official statement, the NDPC explained that it has seen many cases where people’s privacy is ignored for the sake of entertainment.
As reported by Punch, a major example involved a creator in Lagos who filmed passers-by for a “reality show” without their knowledge.
The NDPC said this practice is an abuse of rights and does not serve any good purpose for the public.
The commission explained that these acts break the 1999 Constitution and the Nigeria Data Protection Act of 2023.
These laws give every Nigerian the right to control their own personal information.
According to the commission, filming a person’s image requires their direct consent. Without it, the act is illegal and unfair.
The commission has now ordered major social media platforms like TikTok, X, and Meta to enforce their rules more strictly.
It warned that any platform that fails to stop these privacy violations will be punished.
The NDPC affirmed that the goal is to prevent harm to individuals whose data is being used wrongly.
Finally, the NDPC made it clear that every content creator is personally responsible for their actions. Those who continue to ignore the privacy rights of citizens may face criminal charges in court.
