The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) on Tuesday confirmed the death of an officer during Monday’s jailbreak at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Koton Karfe, Kogi State.

The deceased officer was identified as Senior Correctional Assistant (SCA) Shuaibu King David, who lost his life while resisting an attempt by some inmates to escape from the facility.

The Service’s Spokesman, Deputy Controller of Corrections (DCC) Abubakar Umar, in a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja, said that SCA Shuaibu King David paid the ultimate price while preventing the escape.

“The Acting Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, on behalf of the entire Nigerian Correctional Service, extends heartfelt condolences to the family, colleagues, and loved ones of the late personnel. His service and ultimate sacrifice will forever be remembered and honoured.”

Umar added that the Nigerian Correctional Service is working closely with relevant security agencies and local communities to recapture the remaining escapees and bring them to justice.

“Additionally, measures are being taken to enhance security across all custodial centres nationwide to prevent such incidents in the future. The Service remains committed to ensuring the safety of its officers and the security of correctional facilities across the country.”

The statement concluded with a tribute:

“May the soul of SCA Shuaibu King David rest in peace. Amen.”

It will be recalled that twelve inmates escaped from the facility during the incident. Five were rearrested later on Monday, while efforts are ongoing to track and apprehend the remaining escapees.
