Legislative sessions at both the Senate and House of Representatives have been put on hold until Tuesday, 22 July 2025, following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
This adjournment was communicated in a statement released on Monday by the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana.
He explained that the decision was made to allow lawmakers to pay their respects and participate in funeral activities for the late former president, who died in London on Sunday, 13 July 2025.
“In tribute to his life of service to the nation, the Senate President and the Speaker of the House have instructed that all legislative duties be suspended. Lawmakers are advised to adjust their schedules accordingly,” the statement noted.
The leadership of the National Assembly also expressed their deep sympathies to Buhari’s widow, Aisha, his children, the people of Katsina State, and Nigerians.

They praised Buhari’s enduring legacy, highlighting his unwavering dedication to national unity and his reputation for integrity.
Buhari, a native of Daura in Katsina State, first led Nigeria as a military ruler from January 1984 to August 1985.
He later served two terms as a democratically elected president from 29 May 2015 to 29 May 2023.
