The National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS) has called on the Governing Council of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), and the Federal Ministry of Education to address concerns over the institution’s accountability and ensure that students receive the high-quality education and welfare they deserve.
In a statement issued on Thursday by NANS Senate President, Babatunde Akinteye, in Ibadan, the association expressed its support for the Governing Council’s decision to investigate allegations against the university’s Registrar.
Akinteye highlighted that one of the key allegations involved a prolonged delay in fumigating the university’s 27 hostels, despite reports of severe pest infestations.
Akinteye explained that upon assuming office, the acting Vice-Chancellor of the university made students’ welfare a priority, securing necessary approvals for the fumigation of the hostels on October 28, 2024. However, despite the approval, the fumigation was delayed, causing students to endure unhygienic and unsafe conditions for months.
“The infestation, which includes bedbugs, rats, mosquitoes, and even snakes, posed serious health risks to students,” Akinteye said. He noted that the delay in fumigating the hostels was an example of “administrative sabotage” that led to unnecessary hardship for students before the fumigation process finally began in January 2025.
NANS expressed strong support for the UNN Governing Council’s decision to set up a committee to investigate these disturbing developments.
The association praised the council’s chairman for his integrity and commitment to ensuring the proper administration of the university.
“We align with the decision of the UNN Governing Council to set up a committee to investigate these disturbing developments and stand firmly with the Council Chairman, recognising his integrity and commitment to the proper administration of the university,” Akinteye stated.
NANS also urged the university’s governing body, the Federal Ministry of Education, and all relevant authorities to act swiftly to restore accountability at the institution.
The association emphasised that UNN is an important national institution, and the welfare and education of its students should not be compromised by administrative mismanagement.
“We strongly advise the council to ensure that justice is done. The UNN is an institution of national pride, and we will not stand by while its progress is derailed by administrative misconduct,” Akinteye concluded.
The call from NANS underscores the growing frustration among students at universities across Nigeria regarding their welfare and the quality of services provided by academic institutions.
