The Minority Caucus in the House of Representatives has urged the Federal Government to urgently implement political and economic reforms, warning that Nigeria’s development remains stunted without bold structural changes and inclusive governance.
In a statement marking Nigeria’s 65th Independence anniversary, Minority Leader Rep. Kingsley Chinda (PDP–Rivers) said the moment calls not just for celebration, but for sober reflection on the nation’s progress and persistent challenges.
“We must face the uncomfortable truth that our political and economic structures need deliberate and timely reforms,” Chinda stated, according to the News Agency of Nigeria.
He emphasised the need for fairness, equity, and justice in the distribution of national resources, stressing that no Nigerian should be marginalised based on ethnicity, religion, or region.
Chinda lamented ongoing issues such as insecurity, hunger, youth unemployment, and inadequate infrastructure, saying these continue to hinder Nigeria’s path to sustainable development.
“As a nation, we face issues of governance and a lack of inclusive economic growth that have left vast segments of our population trapped in poverty,” he said.
He added that national cohesion is under strain due to widening divisions, which must be addressed through deliberate acts of justice and inclusion.
Paying tribute to Nigeria’s founding fathers and heroes of independence, the Minority Leader said their sacrifices should inspire current leaders to prioritise the welfare of the people and uphold the principles of accountability.
“Nation-building is a continuous collective task. No single group, no matter how powerful, can achieve meaningful progress in isolation,” Chinda said.
He called on Nigerians to embrace unity and diversity, urging citizens to recommit to peace, shared purpose, and the building of a stronger, more equitable Nigeria.
“May we rise from the ashes of our challenges and build a nation that fulfils the dreams of our founding fathers and the expectations of future generations,” he concluded.
