A devastating fire in the early hours of Saturday, engulfed the renowned spare parts market at Gate in Ibadan, Oyo State, and causing losses estimated in billions of naira.
The fire, which began around midnight, continued to spread as firefighters and local residents worked relentlessly to contain it, adding to the series of tragedies which has befallen the ancient city.
This follows the recent stampede at Islamic High School that claimed over 30 lives.
The General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Services, Mr. Akinyemi Akinyinka, confirmed the incident to journalists and described it as a massive tragedy.
He appealed to private water tanker owners to assist in extinguishing the fire, as the firefighting team continues to battle the flames.
The firefighter said as at this time, the cause of the fire remains unknown, and authorities are expected to commence investigations once the situation is brought under control.
He said, “The cause of the fire remains unknown, with investigations currently underway to determine its source.”
