Tragedy has struck the Nigerian Army following the gruesome death of Lieutenant Dr. Samson Haruna, a military medical officer who was allegedly set ablaze by his wife, Retyit Dalong Haruna, at their residence in Wellington Bassey Barracks, Abak, Akwa Ibom State.
The shocking incident occurred on September 22, 2025, barely six months after the couple’s wedding. Haruna, a medical doctor and officer attached to the 6 Battalion Regimental Medical Unit, sustained severe burns after his wife allegedly doused him and their bed with petrol before setting it on fire while he was asleep.
According to military sources, the couple, who got married on April 21, 2025, had been embroiled in a series of disputes over alleged infidelity. On the night of the tragedy, an argument reportedly broke out between them before the wife allegedly carried out the deadly act while her husband slept.

Lt. Haruna was rushed to the barracks medical facility before being transferred to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH), where he eventually succumbed to his injuries despite efforts by doctors to save his life.
A native of Benue State, Haruna was described by colleagues as a disciplined officer and dedicated medical professional who chose to serve his country in the military after completing medical school. “He was quiet, humble, and deeply committed to his duty. His death is heartbreaking,” one officer said.
Military authorities have since confirmed the arrest of Mrs. Haruna, who is currently in custody as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding her husband’s death.
Spokesperson for the Nigerian Army’s 2 Brigade, Uyo, who confirmed the incident under condition of anonymity, said: “The suspect is being held for questioning, and a thorough investigation has been launched to determine the motive and full details of the tragic event.”
The death of Lt. Haruna has sparked widespread outrage and sorrow within the military community and beyond, with many describing the incident as one of the most disturbing cases of domestic violence to hit the Nigerian Armed Forces in recent years.
The Army has assured that justice will be served and that all necessary disciplinary and legal actions will be taken once investigations are concluded.
