Mojisola Meranda has been reelected as the Deputy Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly following her resignation as Speaker on Monday afternoon.
Meranda, who had only assumed the role of Speaker on January 13, 2025, after the impeachment of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, read out her resignation letter at the plenary.
She expressed her commitment to serving the state in her new role as Deputy Speaker, pledging to carry out her duties in good faith.
Following Meranda’s resignation, the House moved swiftly to reconstitute its leadership, with new nominations made.
Mudashiru Obasa, who had been ousted earlier this year amid allegations of financial misconduct and authoritarianism, was nominated once again to return as Speaker.

In addition to Obasa’s nomination, other leadership roles were filled, including the reinstatement of David Setonji as Deputy Chief Whip, the nomination of Richard Kasumu as Deputy Majority Leader, Adewale Temitope as Majority Leader, and Mojeed Fatai as Chief Whip.
Meranda’s tenure as Speaker was short-lived, lasting only a few weeks, following the impeachment of Obasa by 32 out of 40 lawmakers due to accusations of financial misconduct, abuse of office, and authoritarian leadership.
Obasa had served as Speaker since 2015 but faced growing criticism during his tenure, leading to his eventual removal.
