Students of Lagos State University and residents of the PPL in the Okokomaiko Area of Lagos State, are living in fear following the exhumation of the body of a 28-year-old graduate, Adedamola Ogunbode.
The LASU Political Science Education graduate was reportedly missing since January 16, 2025, amid rumours that his mutilated body had been discovered.
Although the Lagos State Police Command maintained that Ogunbode’s case remained that of a “missing person” investigation, the students alleged that he was “killed in cold blood by a so-called prophet in Ojo, Lagos State.”
However, the command’s spokesperson, Chief Superintendent of Police Benjamin Hundeyin, refuted this claim.
Hundeyin further disclosed that three suspects, including a prophet, were arrested in connection with the case.
Recently, the Lagos State Police Command said it exhumed the body of Ogunbode buried in a shallow grave behind the LASU fence in its Ojo Campus.
The Command had also sealed a church over the alleged killing of the student.
Our reporter, who visited the scene of the incident, observed several students from the area walking anxiously and with visible fear.
Speaking to The New Daily Prime, a student who lives in the area, Ayo Arinola, said she was scared and she didn’t know whether she could continue to live in the area.
Arinola stated that many students no longer felt at ease, expressing how the incident had disrupted their sense of safety and peace.
She said, “I am scared. When I heard about the incident, fear gripped me. The situation is shocking. I am not sure if I can pass through this place to my hostel again. Many students can no longer pass through here; it looks scary. This area is now dangerous.”
Another student, Tunde Tijani, expressed fear over the incident.
“When I saw that they had blocked the area, I was so shocked. Then I heard about the incident. The place is so quiet. If one wants to pass through here now, it has to be with a strong mind. Since the body was buried near my area, I’m not sure I can pass through here again.”
Also, a resident and lawyer, Saidi Sanni, said that because of the life involved in the matter, people were living with tension.
Sanni noted that someone was murdered in cold blood, and that was the apprehension.
He said, “Everybody, most especially the students in the area, is filled with fear and anxiety. The area used to be a busy one, but it was when the school demolished the houses that encroached on their land and erected a fence that is not up to standard, and the area is not well-lit.”
Sanni advised that the school provided lighting and security in the area.
Another resident, Boye Bisi, said, “Someone without a strong mind cannot pass through this area. Given what happened, it’s uncertain whether anyone would feel safe passing through. If I were a student, I’m not sure I could live here. People are panicking.”
A top member of the Lagos State University Students’ Union, who requested anonymity citing security reasons, said the union and the school were working together to ensure students’ safety.
The source stated, “The union has been showing support to ensure the students are safe with the help of the management. As I am talking to you, there are school marshals safeguarding the area.”
