A primary school teacher at Christ Mitots School in Ikorodu, Lagos State, has been suspended indefinitely after a disturbing video surfaced on social media showing her physically abusing a toddler in a numeracy class. The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with many calling for the teacher’s arrest.
The video, which was shared on social media on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, shows the teacher violently smacking the toddler for failing to answer a question correctly. The child is seen crying and trying to defend themselves as the teacher continues to assault them.
The Lagos police have since arrested the teacher, who is being detained pending an investigation. Benjamin Hundeyin, the Lagos police PRO, confirmed the arrest, stating that the teacher would be charged accordingly.
The Lagos Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) has also condemned the teacher’s behavior, emphasizing that institutions of learning must provide safe and protective environments for all children. The agency stated that the teacher’s actions were a clear violation of the Nigerian Child Act, which prohibits physical, mental, or emotional abuse of children.
In a statement, the school authority expressed its concern over the viral footage, describing the teacher’s action as “unacceptable and contrary to the values and principles of our school.” The school apologized to the student and their family, offering support and ensuring that their needs are addressed.
The school has also taken steps to prevent similar incidents in the future. Mandatory training sessions will be conducted for teachers on child protection protocols, positive disciplinary practices, and sensitivity in interactions with students. A confidential whistle-blowing system has also been introduced to encourage the prompt reporting of inappropriate behavior.
The incident has sparked a wider conversation about the need for stricter regulations and monitoring of schools to prevent child abuse. Many have called for greater accountability and consequences for teachers who engage in abusive behavior.
The Lagos State Government has also weighed in on the issue, reaffirming its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all children in the state. The government has promised to work with stakeholders to promote a zero-tolerance policy for abuse in any form.
