The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, on Wednesday held a high-level meeting with representatives from 15 Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) to coordinate plans and security arrangements for this year’s Democracy Day commemorations.
In a statement issued by the Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, it was revealed that the meeting focused on ensuring public safety, law and order during the events scheduled for 12 June.
According to Hundeyin, all participating groups expressed a shared commitment to maintaining peace throughout their activities.
Half of the CSOs signalled their intention to hold peaceful celebrations, while the other half announced plans for non-disruptive protests.
The protesting groups reportedly agreed to converge at the Ikeja Under-Bridge before proceeding together to Gani Fawehinmi Park in Ojota – the only officially sanctioned venue for demonstrations.
“It was agreed that no protests would take place outside the designated venue at Gani Fawehinmi Park, Ojota,” Hundeyin said.
The dialogue also underscored the need for strict adherence to existing security protocols to protect lives and property across the state. All CSOs present pledged to relay the meeting’s resolutions to other civil society groups not in attendance, urging widespread compliance.
Organisers were further advised to safeguard their events from infiltration by miscreants or individuals intent on inciting unrest. The police also emphasised the importance of preventing disruptions to traffic, public order, and other lawful celebrations.
Reaffirming its role, the Lagos State Police Command assured the public of adequate security throughout the Democracy Day events. Residents were encouraged to participate peacefully and to remain law-abiding.
“The Command remains resolute in its duty to maintain peace and order,” Hundeyin concluded, urging Lagosians to observe the day’s commemorations without fear.
