In a move to bolster security and ease the financial burden on vehicle owners, the Lagos State Government has officially approved a three-month rebate window for the replacement of faded and unreadable number plates.
The directive, approved by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, was announced on Wednesday, by the Permanent Secretary of the Motor Vehicles Administration Agency (MVAA), Rasheed Muri-Okunola.
The initiative is part of the state’s renewed focus on road safety and standardised vehicle identification.

According to him, clear and legible number plates are not just an aesthetic requirement but a critical pillar of the state’s security architecture.
Faded plates currently hinder making it difficult for security cameras and law enforcement to track suspicious vehicles, obstructing the work of traffic officials and digital tracking systems and delaying the identification of vehicles involved in accidents.
“This is not just a regulatory exercise; it is a public safety measure,” Muri-Okunola stated. “When number plates are clear and standardised, it improves efficiency across transportation, security, and emergency response systems.”
The three-month window is specifically designed for motorists whose plates have worn out due to prolonged use or harsh weather conditions.
By offering a “reduced cost” replacement, the state aims to encourage voluntary compliance rather than resorting to immediate penalties.
To take advantage of this incentive, vehicle owners are advised to visit the following government-approved locations.
MVAA One-Stop Centre, Oshodi: the designated Pilot Centre for the rebate program or any MVAA Station located across the various local governments in the state.

He cautioned the public to avoid unauthorised agents and third-party “touts.” To ensure the validity of the new plates and integration into the state’s digital database, all replacements must be processed directly through official MVAA channels.
The initiative reflects the “Greater Lagos” vision of balancing strict law enforcement with empathy for the citizens’ economic realities.
