In a decisive move to advance Universal Health Coverage (UHC), the Lagos State Government has launched the Ilera N’ Tiwa Cooperative and Multipurpose Society, an initiative under the Ilera Eko Scheme spearheaded by the Lagos State Health Management Agency (LASHMA).
In a statement posted on the state government’s X page today, it was disclosed that the programme is designed to empower residents, particularly those in the informal sector, by offering flexible health insurance options and economic benefits.
Speaking at the launch, Bayo Adedewe, Chairman of LASHMA’s Board, described the cooperative as a ‘child of necessity’, aimed at addressing challenges such as low purchasing power and limited access to quality healthcare.
“This initiative allows members to pay premiums flexibly while benefiting from loans, discounted food supplies, and wellness programmes,” he said, adding that it aligns with the Lagos State Health Scheme Law and the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) Act.
Adedewe highlighted the cooperative’s slogan, “Health First”, as reflective of its commitment to making healthcare affordable, accessible, and sustainable.
He expressed confidence that the initiative would accelerate Lagos State’s progress toward UHC and serve as a replicable model for other states.
In the same vein, Emmanuella Zamba, Permanent Secretary of LASHMA, noted that many informal sector workers lack access to traditional banking systems, which hampers health insurance enrollment.
She explained that the cooperative resolves this by partnering with microfinance banks to enable installment payments and by integrating social benefits like cheaper food options and wellness initiatives.
Furthermore, Rotimi Olatunji, LASHMA’s Head of Business Development, listed the cooperative’s objectives, including addressing solvency challenges, expanding benefits, and reducing enrollment attrition.
He also announced the formation of independent steering and advisory committees to ensure effective implementation and awareness creation.
Moreover, Olugbemi Aina, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade, and Investment, commended the programme for its potential to drive economic empowerment.
Represented by Ayotunde Abiodun, Aina said, “This initiative will improve lives and set a standard for other states to emulate.”
The Ilera N’ Tiwa Cooperative Society not only offers flexible premiums but also seeks to create a culture of wellness, financial inclusion, and entrepreneurship among Lagosians.
