The Lagos State government has charged driving school operators to deliver high-quality driver’s education as a critical strategy for tackling the state’s persistent traffic and transportation challenges.
The directive was issued by the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, during the 2025 “Train-the-Trainer Workshop” organised by the Lagos State Drivers’ Institute (LASDRI).

Speaking at the event, themed “Drivers Education: Panacea to Economic Growth and Development,” Osiyemi highlighted the immense scale of Lagos’s transportation system.
“Lagos, with over 20 million residents and nearly six million registered vehicles, witnesses more than 15 million daily motorized trips,” he stated.
He added that without competent drivers, this scale could lead to “public health crises, traffic paralysis, and massive productivity loss.”
He emphasised that a well-governed transport system is essential for driving economic growth not just for the state, but for the wider region.
The Commissioner explained that the workshop aligns with global initiatives such as the United Nations Decade of Action on road safety and is a deliberate part of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s development strategy.
Osiyemi lauded LASDRI for its continuous efforts to enhance public transport safety, specifically citing the introduction of a new computer-based recertification test and other data-backed training processes.
In her welcome address, the General Manager of LASDRI, Tiamiyu Afusat, noted that the workshop provides a unique platform for transport sector stakeholders to discuss government policies and improve service delivery.
She stressed that effective driver education goes beyond vehicle operation, as it “instills a sense of responsibility and awareness that extends to every decision they make on the road”, including respecting the rights of pedestrians and cyclists.
