Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have impeached the speaker, Mudashiru Obasa.
He was accused of multiple statutory and financial infractions.
Obasa was subsequently replaced by his deputy, Mojisola Meranda.
Mrs Meranda, who represents Apapa Constituency 1, was also a former chief whip of the house.
Mojeed Fatai is now the Deputy Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
Obasa has been engulfed in a series of controversial circumstances in terms of financial dealings.
The removal comes barely a month after Obasa was accused of allegedly spending N17 billion to fix a gate that leads to the assembly.
The lawmakers subsequently elected Mojisola Meranda, representative of Apapa I, as the new speaker.
Meranda, who took her oath of office immediately, would serve as the first female speaker of the Lagos legislature.
Meanwhile, security operatives have taken over the premises of the Assembly complex.
A member of the All Progressives Congress in the state who pleaded anonymity disclosed to New Daily Prime that the impeachment of Obasa has nothing to do with the upcoming governorship election in the state
“This is unconnected with the 2027 governor election. The lawmakers only stepped in over the embattled speaker’s action,” he said.
Obasa has been claimed in some quarters to be one of the governorship aspirants inching to succeed incumbent, Babajide Sanwo-Olu in 2027.
