Renowned historian Professor Toyin Falola has expressed optimism that the upcoming reign of Olubadan-designate Oba Rashidi Ladoja will usher in a new era of modernisation for Ibadanland. Falola made these remarks on Wednesday while delivering the First Olubadan Coronation Lecture held in honour of Ladoja, themed: “Ibadan History: Issues in Tradition and Modernity.”
Ladoja is set to be installed as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland on Friday. According to Falola, Ladoja’s extensive experience as a politician, statesman, and successful businessman is expected to drive development and enhance the economic wellbeing of the state.
“Though he is not the governor, the expectations of the people of Ibadan and the state are high because he has the power to influence things to be achievable,” Falola said.
The historian also called on the people of Ibadan to embrace modernisation by adopting better waste disposal and improving environmental hygiene. He emphasised the importance of promoting Ibadanland’s cultural heritage, highlighting the city’s deep connection to modernity and its track record of producing accomplished businessmen, women, and politicians.
The Chairman of the Coronation Lecture Committee, Professor Amidu Sani, noted that the lecture was designed to highlight the intellectual richness of Ibadanland and to correct misconceptions about its indigenes.
Chief Bayo Oyero, Chairman of the Coronation Committee, added that the lecture was intended not just as an academic exercise but as a moment for reflection, guidance, and strategic planning for the new Olubadan’s leadership.
The event was attended by notable figures including the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Kayode Adebowale, Vice Chancellor of Lead City University, Professor Kamorudeen Adeyemi, as well as traditional title holders from Ibadanland.
