Kylian Mbappe has encountered a hurdle in his attempt to recover €55 million in unpaid wages from PSG. The French international moved to Real Madrid last summer after his contract with PSG expired. However, the saga between the player and the Ligue 1 giants appears far from over, as they remain locked in a wage dispute. Mbappe claims he is owed €55 million in unpaid wages, while PSG counters that these are waived entitlements that Mbappe agreed to during negotiations for his last contract extension with the club.
The Frenchman took the matter before the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) Legal Commission. The Commission, which has non-binding jurisdiction to either grant or dismiss Mbappe’s claim, recommended mediation between the parties after a two-hour hearing. While PSG is amenable to mediation, the Real Madrid star has three choices: accept mediation as recommended by the LFP Legal Commission, drop his claim, or proceed with formal legal action.
The option of formal legal action could drag on for more than two years before an Employment Tribunal. The crux of the matter would be whether a verbal agreement Mbappe made with PSG in 2023 – to not leave the club on a free transfer without some form of compensation – is binding. As part of this agreement, Mbappe reportedly agreed to forego two loyalty bonus payments totaling €55 million. However, he refused to sign subsequent paperwork drafted by the club to formalize the agreement, leading PSG to believe he intended to stay.
Following the LFP Legal Commission’s ruling, PSG released a statement expressing satisfaction with the decision. The statement reads, “Paris Saint-Germain is very pleased with today’s two-hour hearing before the Commission. The club recalled that the player has made clear, repeated public and private commitments that must be respected, having been afforded unprecedented benefits by the club over seven fantastic years in Paris.”
