The Kwara State Government has expressed concerns over rising cases of student loitering during school hours and unruly behaviour among the students in the state capital, Ilorin.
This was highlighted during an unscheduled visit by the Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Hajia Sa’adatu Modibbo Kawu, to Government Day Secondary School, Adeta, and Government High School, Adeta.
The Commissioner in a statement by Peter Amogbonjaye, the Press Secretary of the Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development said there was a decade-long rivalry existed between the two schools, which recently escalated into unrest.
The Commissioner criticised the students for their misconduct and the school management for failing to promptly inform the Ministry about the situation.

Ms Kawu urged the students to change their attitudes, focus on their studies, and strive for a better future.
She reassured the schools of the government’s commitment to addressing their challenges while emphasising the administration’s dedication to revamping the education sector.
The Commissioner commended the teachers for their dedication and reminded them to adhere to government policies aimed at improving the education system.
She called on the students to reciprocate the government’s efforts by behaving responsibly and becoming role models for their families and the state.
The Principals of both schools, Hajia Fausat Ishola and Mallam Waheed Issa, praised the government’s efforts to improve education and appealed for the reconstruction of perimeter fencing to prevent students from leaving school premises during classes.
However, the students expressed remorse for their actions and pledged to avoid further unruly behaviour.
In a related development, about 20 students were apprehended for loitering during school hours in various parts of Ilorin.
At a meeting with the students and their parents, Ms Kawu emphasised the importance of parental involvement in ensuring students remain focused on their education.

She warned the students to desist from such behaviour, stressing that the government is committed to providing quality and inclusive education for all.
The students and their parents pledged to collaborate with schools to prevent further incidents and ensure regular class attendance.
