The 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, held a closed-door meeting on Tuesday night with a delegation from the office of Abba Kabir Yusuf, shortly after hosting top government officials for an Iftar at his historic Gidan Rumfa palace.
The private meeting has intensified speculation over the state government’s stance in the ongoing emirship dispute between Sanusi II and Aminu Ado Bayero, which has kept Kano’s traditional throne under legal contest.
Confirming the development via a Facebook post early Wednesday, the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Tofa, said the delegation comprised the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Ibrahim; the Chief of Staff, Sulaiman Wali Sani; and himself. “Shortly after the Iftar at Emir’s Palace, the governor’s delegation had a closed-door meeting with His Highness,” Tofa wrote.
The meeting comes amid uncertainty over the fate of Kano’s centuries-old Durbar festival, a traditional procession associated with Sallah celebrations. Conflicting statements from government officials have left residents questioning whether the festival will hold this year and under whose authority it will be conducted.
Although Governor Yusuf reinstated Sanusi II as emir in 2024, Aminu Ado Bayero has continued to challenge his removal in court, leaving the emirship under dispute. The state government had previously hinted that the lingering controversy over the throne could soon be resolved.
Observers have interpreted the Iftar gathering and subsequent private meeting as a signal of growing alignment between the state administration and Emir Sanusi II, raising expectations that the emirship controversy may be leaning toward resolution.
As Sallah approaches, all eyes in Kano are on the Durbar festival, with questions remaining over its conduct and whether it will be presided over by Sanusi II, Bayero, or both in a bid to maintain peace and tradition in the ancient city.
The outcome of these discussions is likely to shape Kano’s cultural calendar and influence the broader political dynamics surrounding the emirship in the coming months.
