According to the statement, the restructuring will create a unified Ministry of Education responsible for overseeing all levels of education in the state.
“The governor has approved the merger of the Ministry of Higher Education with the Ministry of Education in a decisive step to strengthen coordination and accelerate reforms in Kano State’s education sector,” the statement said.
Under the new arrangement, a specialised Directorate of Higher Education will be established within the ministry to handle tertiary education matters.
The statement added that the directorate would be headed by a permanent secretary and supported by relevant personnel to ensure effective supervision of higher education institutions.
“Following the restructuring, the new entity will operate as the Ministry of Education, with a specialised Directorate of Higher Education established within the ministry to oversee tertiary education activities,” Mr Dawakin Tofa said.
He explained that agencies previously under the dissolved ministry would now operate under the unified structure.
“Under this restructuring, all agencies under the defunct Higher Education Ministry such as the Scholarship Board will return to the Ministry of Education, while state-owned universities and other higher education institutions will also be supervised by the new directorate under the merged ministry,” the statement added.
The Kano government said the move forms part of its ongoing education sector reforms aimed at improving efficiency and eliminating overlapping responsibilities across ministries.
Mr Yusuf said the reform was designed to reduce the cost of governance while strengthening accountability and improving the quality of education administration in the state.
“This reform is designed to reduce the cost of governance while enhancing efficiency, accountability, and the overall quality of education administration in Kano State,” the governor said.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to implementing reforms that would revitalise the education sector and secure better opportunities for young people in the state.
Consequently, the governor directed the Office of the Secretary to the State Government and the Office of the Head of Service to ensure the immediate implementation of the restructuring and realignment of affected ministries and departments.
