Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has launched the Odatiwa Women’s Initiative’s Grant, a financial empowerment scheme designed to support 1,000 low-income women across the state.
The initiative was unveiled on Saturday during the 2025 International Women’s Day (IWD) celebration at the International Culture and Event Centre (The Dome) in Akure.
The event, themed “For All Women and Girls: Rights, Equality, and Employment,” emphasised gender equality, inclusiveness, and women’s empowerment.
Speaking at the event, Governor Aiyedatiwa reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to prioritizing the welfare and development of women, particularly those from underprivileged backgrounds.
He underscored economic empowerment as a key strategy for ensuring that women thrive in business, leadership, and other sectors.

“The economic empowerment of women is a top priority for this administration. We believe that when women are supported, families flourish, communities grow, and society progresses.
“That is why we are rolling out initiatives like this grant to provide women with the financial backing needed to expand their businesses and improve their economic status,” the governor said.

He further pledged to increase women’s participation in leadership and governance, stating:
“As we move forward, we will ensure that women are actively involved in decision-making at all levels. The empowerment of women is not just a goal; it is a necessity for a thriving society.”
Governor Aiyedatiwa also acknowledged the critical role women played in the political and socio-economic development of the state, particularly in his victory in the November 16, 2024, gubernatorial election.
“The new dawn we all crave is here, and I want to thank all women in Ondo State for their loyalty and commitment. We will continue to prioritize matters affecting women and the girl-child, ensuring they have opportunities to reach their full potential,” he said.
He assured that his administration would continue to uphold and expand women’s inclusivity in governance, citing the recent appointments made at the state and local government levels as evidence of this commitment.
The governor emphasised that achieving gender equality requires a collective effort from the government, institutions, and individuals.
He urged stakeholders to support initiatives that promote the rights and empowerment of women.
However, the Special Adviser to the governor on Women’s Affairs and convener of the event, Seun Osamaye, described the initiative as a major step toward closing the gender gap in Ondo State.
“This initiative is timely and impactful, as it reflects the commitment of the Aiyedatiwa administration to ensuring that no woman is left behind.
“By empowering women, we are not just supporting individuals but also strengthening families, communities, and the entire state’s economy,” she stated.

More so, the former Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Princess Oladunni Odu, encouraged women to be bold, resilient, and proactive in pursuing leadership roles and economic independence.
Temiloluwa Okin, a student of Fiwasaye Girls Grammar School, Akure, also commended the governor’s administration for initiatives such as free student transportation and the payment of WAEC fees, which have eased financial burdens on families.
The event featured a panel discussion on gender equality and inclusiveness, with experts and policymakers addressing critical issues such as women’s participation in leadership, economic opportunities, education, and strategies to combat gender-based violence.
A highlight of the event was the official presentation of grant cheques to some of the 1,000 beneficiaries.
