The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, officially unveiled the National Assessment Report on Children and Young Adults Deprived of Liberty on Tuesday.

In a statement posted on his Facebook page, Tunji-Ojo reaffirmed the unwavering commitment of President Bola Tinubu’s administration to comprehensive reforms within the Nigerian Correctional Service.

He stressed his deep passion for offering inmates, particularly children and young adults, a second chance at a better life.

The statement partly read: “I strongly believe that a minor action of a minor should not be a major setback for his future. While appreciating the efforts of all contributors to the report, I want to assure the public that our government will carefully pay attention to all issues raised, and ensure that a sustainable solution is sought.

“Once again, beyond a name change from prisons to corrections, the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is committed to exhausting all measures to reform the Correctional Service into a hub for rehabilitation, reformation, and redemption.

“I acknowledge the active roles played by key stakeholders and partners at the launch including officials of the Ministry of Justice, Prisoner’s Rehabilitation and Welfare Action (PRAWA), UNICEF, Nigerian Bar Association, British High Commission, US Embassy, European Union, National Bureau of Statistics, Nigeria Police Force, National Human Rights Commission, National Assembly, amongst others.”
