Nigeria’s security situation has taken a turn for the worse, with former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi expressing his deep concern over the escalating violence across the country.
The recent attacks on Borgaja and other communities in Sokoto State, which forced residents to flee their homes, are a stark reminder of the country’s dire security situation.
Obi described the situation as “tragic” and a “complete breakdown of governance and humanity” in a post on X. Nigeria has been grappling with terrorism for over a decade, and the latest Global Terrorism Index report ranks the country fourth globally in terms of terrorism-related deaths, with 750 people killed in 2025, a 46% increase from 2024.
The situation is dire, with non-state actors assuming control in some states, dictating who lives where and under what conditions.
Obi questioned how Nigeria reached a point where citizens are taking instructions from terrorists instead of their government.
He emphasized that no nation can progress when its people live in fear, and it’s time for the government to take decisive action to protect lives and property.
The security crisis is not just a security issue; it’s a national emergency. Obi urged the government to prioritize the protection of citizens and restore peace to the country.
The situation requires urgent attention, and it’s crucial for the government to address the root causes of the violence and work towards a solution.
