The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has debunked a viral graphic circulating online which claims that the commission has fixed March 26 as the deadline for government officials intending to contest elections to resign from their positions.
In a public notice issued by the commission on Friday, INEC said the information is false and did not originate from the electoral body, describing the graphic as fake and misleading.

“The attention of the commission has been drawn to a graphic currently circulating online claiming that the Commission has announced March 26 as the deadline for government officials seeking election to resign,” INEC said.
“The commission wishes to state clearly that the information is false and did not emanate from INEC.”
INEC emphasised that it has not made any announcement fixing a resignation deadline for political appointees seeking elective offices.
“The Commission has not issued any such announcement, and the graphic being circulated is fake and misleading,” it stated.
The electoral body therefore urged members of the public, media organisations and political stakeholders to disregard the message in its entirety.
INEC also advised Nigerians to rely only on its verified communication channels for official information regarding electoral matters.
“For the avoidance of doubt, all official information, announcements, and updates from the Commission are published only through INEC’s verified channels,” the notice added.
The commission further encouraged citizens to verify election-related information through its official website, verified social media platforms and press releases before sharing such content.
INEC reaffirmed its commitment to providing accurate, timely and transparent information to the public.
