The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially declared the start of electioneering campaigns for the 2026 Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council election.
According to a press release issued by Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, political parties and their candidates can commence public campaigns from Wednesday, 24 September 2025, until midnight on Thursday, 19 February 2026.
The announcement aligns with Section 94(1) of the Electoral Act 2022 and item 8 of INEC’s Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the election, which is set to take place on Saturday, 21 February 2026.
The FCT Area Council election will determine the leadership of the six area councils in the Federal Capital Territory, a significant poll in Nigeria’s administrative capital.
INEC has urged political parties, candidates, and their supporters to adhere to the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022, particularly Sections 92 and 93, which prohibit the use of abusive language, physical attacks on opponents, and the destruction of campaign materials.
The commission emphasised that such actions are unlawful and undermine the democratic process.
Furthermore, Section 95(2) of the Act explicitly bars the use of incumbency to unfairly advantage or disadvantage any party or candidate, ensuring a level playing field.
The commission also called for unimpeded access to public facilities for all parties and candidates, including media platforms, outdoor advertising spaces, and venues for rallies and meetings.
This directive aims to foster an inclusive and fair campaign environment.
The commission has vowed to monitor compliance with electoral guidelines to ensure a peaceful and orderly process.
