Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has called on Nigerians to rise above division and embrace unity, enterprise, and collective responsibility to build a stronger and more prosperous nation.
Speaking through his Deputy, Monday Onyeme, at a ceremony commemorating Nigeria’s 65th Independence anniversary on Wednesday, Governor Oborevwori highlighted the significance of the day as an opportunity for national reflection and renewed commitment to unity, peace, and sustainable development.
“The true strength of Delta lies in its people,” the governor said. “As we mark Nigeria’s independence, let us also embrace independence in our daily lives—independence from ethnic division and rivalry, from dependency, and from forces that divide us.”
He urged Deltans and Nigerians at large to honour the legacy of the nation’s founding fathers by rejecting the things that fragment the country and instead rallying under the common banner of unity and purpose.
Governor Oborevwori described Independence Day as a moment to remember the nation’s history, reflect on its journey, and renew its shared commitment to progress.
“We remember the sacrifices of our founding fathers and the many heroes who fought for the freedom we enjoy today,” he said. “We reflect on our journey as a nation—the victories, the struggles, and the lessons. And we renew our commitment to the values of unity, peace, and progress.”
He expressed gratitude to Deltans both at home and abroad for their continued support of his administration, noting that such solidarity remains the engine behind the state’s progress.
The governor also extended his congratulations to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on the anniversary, praying for divine guidance and wisdom for the President as he leads Nigeria through challenging times.
Highlighting the efforts of his administration, Governor Oborevwori reaffirmed his commitment to the MORE Agenda—a policy framework focused on Meaningful development, Opportunities for all, Realistic reforms, and Enhanced peace and security.
“Here in Delta State, we are working with focus and determination under the MORE Agenda. Our goal is simple: to improve lives, create opportunities, and secure the future of our children,” he stated.
He listed ongoing infrastructure projects across the state, including highway construction, flyover bridges, rural and urban road developments, drainage systems, and waterway structures.
While acknowledging the long road ahead, the governor expressed optimism in Delta’s journey toward a better future.
“We are heading towards sustainable progress, having a happy populace confident of their hopes for a better tomorrow,” he said. “But government alone cannot build the Delta of our dreams.”
Governor Oborevwori’s message echoes a growing chorus of voices across the country using this year’s Independence Day to call for a united, peaceful, and forward-looking Nigeria.
His emphasis on community, shared responsibility, and inclusive development reflects a broader appeal to Nigerians to reject the forces of division and focus on collective progress as the country navigates its sixth decade of independence.
