Ibadan stampede case: Sympathisers demand release of Ooni’s ex-queen, radio CEO

A group of supporters has called for the release of former Ooni of Ife’s queen, Naomi Silekunola, and the Chief Executive Officer of Agidigbo FM, Oriyomi Hamzat, who are currently held in connection with the tragic stampede at a funfair in Ibadan, Oyo State, on December 18, 2024.

Silekunola and Hamzat, along with Fasasi Abdullahi, the Principal of Islamic High School where the event took place, were remanded at the Agodi Correctional Centre following a court order issued on Tuesday, December 24  by Chief Magistrate Olabisi Ogunkanmi of Magistrate’s Court 1, sitting in Iyaganku, Ibadan.

The stampede reportedly resulted in the deaths of several children, sparking outrage and investigations into the incident.

In a video shared by Drive TV News and observed by PUNCH Online, sympathisers were seen weeping and kneeling outside the Ibadan Network Centre of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA).

They pleaded for the release of Silekunola and Hamzat, describing them as benefactors to many.

A man identified as Peluola Akintayo appealed to both the Federal Government and the Oyo State Government, urging them to facilitate the release of the detainees.

Kareem Toyin, a businesswoman from Afijio and a representative of market women, spoke passionately about Hamzat’s contributions to the community:  “This man who was arrested, Alhaji Hamzat Oriyomi, is our helper. He always supports people in need. When we heard about the incident, we felt deep sadness. We appeal to the affected families to forgive Hamzat, Queen Naomi, and the principal. He has been a lifeline for many, including students and market women.”

She added that many beneficiaries of Hamzat’s assistance, ranging from financial aid to educational support, were now left in distress over his detention.

Meanwhile, a police officer, identified as the Divisional Police Officer of Yemetu Police Division, addressed the crowd, reassuring them that their grievances would be heard.

“My area commander is on the way. NTA managers are here to listen and broadcast your concerns,” he said.

The case has been adjourned until January 13, 2025, meaning Silekunola, Hamzat, and Abdullahi will spend the festive season in custody.

The detention of such prominent figures has drawn widespread attention, with supporters highlighting their roles in community development and charitable activities.

As the case progresses, the plea for mercy remains loud, with sympathisers urging the authorities to temper justice with compassion.
