Ayuba Gufwan, Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), visited the Christian Blind Mission (CBM) in Abuja on Thursday.
In a statement by Mbanefo J. I., head of the NCPWD’s press and public relations unit, Gufwan underscored the vital role of accurate data in driving effective advocacy and promoting inclusivity for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).
He highlighted the invaluable support CBM provided in his educational journey, describing his connection with the organization as a “divine” one.
Expressing concern over the unverified figure of 35.5 million persons with disabilities in Nigeria, Gufwan emphasized the need for reliable data collection across various disability types and gender groups to inform policies that foster inclusivity.
“Our struggle for inclusivity is holistic, and data accuracy is essential to achieve this goal,” he stated.
Gufwan reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening the partnership with CBM, expressing a keen interest in expanding collaboration to secure greater support and resources that enhance opportunities for persons with disabilities (PWDs).
“I am willing to ask for more at any given opportunity for the benefit of persons with disabilities,” he added, reaffirming his dedication to improving the lives of PWDs in Nigeria.
Abdulaziz Musa, Country Director of CBM, expressed strong support for the NCPWD’s mission, highlighting CBM’s commitment to the Commission’s goals.
“The success of the Commission is the success of CBM,” he stated, emphasising that fully implementing the Disability Act is essential for enabling CBM to assist the Commission in realizing its strategic objectives.
Musa further stressed the value of transparency and open communication in fostering support for persons with disabilities (PWDs) and reducing stigma.
Similarly, Adebukola Adebayo, the World Bank representative to the Commission, emphasised the critical need for capacity building and sectoral coordination.
He encouraged CBM to aid the Commission in strengthening its capacity, which is vital for advancing its mission.
“Working together to build sustainable structures and align priorities will enhance the impact of our efforts to address the unique challenges faced by persons with disabilities,” he noted.
