A socio-political organisation in the South East, the Coalition of South East Youth Leaders (COSEYL), has called for an independent investigation into allegations concerning the National Youth Service Corps participation and legal credentials of the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu.
The demand followed a petition reportedly filed before the Legal Practitioners’ Disciplinary Committee and the National Youth Service Corps by a former First Vice President of the Nigerian Bar Association, John Aikpokpo-Martins.
In a statement signed by its President-General, Goodluck Ibem, and Publicity Secretary, Okey Nwaoru, COSEYL said the allegations raised serious concerns that must be investigated to safeguard the integrity of key national institutions.
The statement said the issues raised in the petition touch on the credibility of the Nigerian Law School, the Council of Legal Education, and the NYSC scheme.
The group said, “The allegations, which question the validity of the Deputy Speaker’s enrolment as a legal practitioner and the authenticity of his participation in the NYSC scheme, are grave and touch on the integrity of key national institutions.”
COSEYL, therefore, urged the Legal Practitioners’ Disciplinary Committee (LPDC) to immediately begin a transparent investigation into the claims.
It also called on the NYSC authorities to verify all relevant records connected to the matter and make their findings public.
According to the group, ensuring transparency in the investigation would help maintain public confidence in professional standards and the rule of law.
COSEYL further advised the Deputy Speaker to temporarily step aside from office while the investigation is conducted.
The statement read, “Given the high office occupied by the Deputy Speaker, COSEYL strongly advises that he steps aside from his position pending the outcome of these investigations.”
The group stressed that the suggestion was not a declaration of guilt but a measure aimed at ensuring that the process is free from interference or undue influence.
It also warned that failure to allow a fair investigation could trigger civic action.
The statement added, “Should there be any attempt to frustrate or suppress a fair investigation, COSEYL will be left with no option but to mobilise lawful and peaceful civic actions to demand accountability.”
The group said such actions could include a one-million-man protest at the National Assembly and the Presidential Villa to press for transparency in the matter.
COSEYL maintained that its position was guided by the need to uphold accountability and protect the credibility of national institutions.
