A civil society group championing good governance in Oyo State, the Concerned Youths Movement (CYM), has petitioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), demanding an investigation into members of the Oyo State House of Assembly over the approval of a ₦300 billion loan for Governor Seyi Makinde.
News of the Assembly’s approval surfaced last week and has since sparked widespread controversy.
In a statement, Hon. Ibraheem Shittu, who represents Saki West State Constituency, confirmed that the lawmakers had indeed given the nod for the loan.
However, CYM, in a communique signed by its Chairman, Pastor Tayo Adigun, and Secretary, Alhaji Olaide Kobomoje, described the approval as illegal, null, and void, insisting that the House failed to form a quorum at the time of the decision.
According to the group, only 13 out of 32 lawmakers were present during the approval process, a number far below the required quorum.
“We are hereby calling the attention of the EFCC to investigate the alleged approval given to the Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, to obtain ₦300 billion by the 13 members of the State House of Assembly,” the statement read.
“This illegality must not be allowed to stand. There is the need for due investigation on the purported emergency approval.”
CYM further urged the anti-graft agency to beam its searchlight on the circumstances surrounding the loan approval, stressing that it does not reflect the will of the majority of the Assembly.
