Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang, visited the German Ambassador to Nigeria, Annette Günther, on Thursday to explore potential collaborations in key sectors, including healthcare, agriculture, renewable energy, and peacebuilding.
Governor Mutfwang, who visited the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Abuja, expressed his gratitude for Germany’s ongoing cooperation with Plateau State, particularly in supporting capacity-building programs for women and youth in modern agriculture.
He reaffirmed Plateau State’s commitment to engaging in the upcoming Nigeria-Germany Cultural Exchange Program, which is set to take place later this year.
The governor highlighted the programme as an opportunity to strengthen ties between Plateau State and the German community, opening avenues for further collaboration.
The governor also addressed the reconstruction of the Luka Bentu Indoor Theatre, stating that the project would receive considerable attention in the coming year.
This initiative is expected to serve as a significant cultural partnership between the state and Germany.

Governor Mutfwang further outlined his administration’s focus on improving the state’s healthcare system by leveraging Germany’s advanced medical expertise.
He sought assistance in training healthcare personnel and deploying renewable energy solutions in health facilities, which could help reduce maternal mortality rates and strengthen disease prevention efforts.
Additionally, the governor announced plans, in collaboration with the Federal Government, to expand the runway of Yakubu Gowon Airport, to transform it into a cargo hub for exporting vegetables and other agricultural products to Europe and beyond.

On the topic of digital innovation, Governor Mutfwang revealed that his administration is working with the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy to enhance ICT infrastructure in Plateau State.
He requested Germany’s support in accelerating efforts to create a more robust digital ecosystem.
Ambassador Günther commended Governor Mutfwang for his visionary leadership and development initiatives in Plateau State.
She assured him of Germany’s continued support, particularly in agriculture, peacebuilding, capacity development, and the digital economy.
Ambassador Günther highlighted the positive impact of German-funded training programs, noting that over 4,000 farmers in Plateau State, including 40% women, have benefitted from initiatives aimed at improving agricultural efficiency, inclusivity, and sustainability.

The Ambassador also spoke on Germany’s strong commitment to student exchange programs, revealing that Nigeria remains the largest recipient of German scholarships.
She encouraged the Plateau State to explore these opportunities for human capital development.
Karin Jansen, First Secretary and Head of Cooperation at the German Embassy, added that the German Development Agency (GIZ) is funding the Peace Corps Project to enhance conflict resolution mechanisms and peacebuilding efforts in Plateau State.
Governor Mutfwang’s visit marks a significant step towards enhancing bilateral ties between Plateau State and Germany, with the potential for continued collaboration in multiple sectors critical to the state’s development.
