Gov AbdulRazaq directs payment of N70,000 minimum wager from October

In a major step to improve the welfare of workers in Kwara State, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has approved the new minimum wage of N70,000, in line with the federal government’s directive.

This announcement was made over the weekend by the State Commissioner for Finance, Hauwa Nuru, who stated that the new wage would be implemented across the state’s public service starting in October.

Following a successful tripartite meeting involving government representatives, leaders of the Organised Labour in Kwara State—comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and the Joint Negotiating Council (JNC)—and members of the organised private sector, the decision also includes consequential adjustments to the relevant salary structures.

Nuru, co-chair of the minimum wage committee, thanked Governor AbdulRazaq for granting the committee full autonomy to negotiate and reach an agreement that benefits all parties.

She highlighted that the swift implementation of this wage increase underscores the governor’s proactive and worker-friendly approach.

Nuru also emphasised that Governor AbdulRazaq remains committed to ensuring the welfare of public servants and citizens of the state, aligning with his broader vision of sustainable development and economic stability.

She added that the approved wage adjustment will extend to workers across all 16 local government areas of the state.

Nuru lauded the governor’s leadership and foresight, noting that the wage policy is a timely and crucial measure to alleviate the economic challenges faced by workers.

She also praised the spirit of cooperation between the government and labour unions, which made the successful outcome possible.

“The new minimum wage is a testament to the state’s commitment to ensuring that workers’ welfare remains at the forefront of its policies, ” she added.
