FUNAAB set to hold 3rd convocation with 3,567 graduates

The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), is set to hold its 3rd convocation on Saturday, marking the graduation of 3,567 students, including 120 with First Class honours. 

Vice-Chancellor, Prof Babatunde Kehinde, disclosed this during a media briefing on Wednesday, January 22.

The breakdown of the graduating students shows that 1,626 students completed their programmes with Second Class Upper, while 1,624 earned Second Class Lower, and 164 finished with Third Class. 

Additionally, 33 students are graduates of Veterinary Medicine. 

The convocation will also feature 30 Postgraduate Diplomas, 274 Master’s degrees, and 136 PhDs.

Prof Kehinde highlighted the university’s academic expansion, with eight new programmes added, including Library and Information Science, Industrial Chemistry, Cyber Security, and Software Engineering. 

FUNAAB now offers 38 fully accredited programmes across 54 departments.

He also celebrated the university’s research achievements, with the National University Commission approving six research proposals worth over N171 million. 

Furthermore, many of the university’s scholars won international grants, contributing to the institution’s growing reputation.

The Vice-Chancellor lauded the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) for supporting 19 ongoing projects aimed at improving the university’s academic and research infrastructure. 

He also stressed the importance of Public-Private Partnerships in addressing the country’s food crisis, citing FUNAAB’s successful collaborations with 30 organisations and the promotion of backyard farming.

FUNAAB has also made significant strides in student welfare, receiving over N133 million from the National Education Loans Fund to assist 1,300 students in the first batch, with more expected in 2025.

The convocation will feature a lecture by Mohammed Ibrahim, Executive Secretary of the National Agricultural Development Fund, and the honouring of two former Vice-Chancellors, Prof Olusola Oyewole and Prof Kolawole Salako, with monuments in their names. 

The event will also showcase farming machinery, reflecting the university’s commitment to agricultural development.
