The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed the death of nine passengers following a tragic road accident along the Jama’are–Azare stretch of the Kano–Maiduguri Expressway in Bauchi State.
The crash, which occurred at about 6:20 am on Friday, involved a commercial vehicle travelling from Gombe to Kano with 19 passengers on board. Ten other occupants sustained various degrees of injuries.
Bauchi State Sector Commander of the FRSC, CC Apaji Boyi, disclosed the incident while addressing journalists, noting that preliminary investigations linked the crash to excessive speed, driver fatigue and loss of control.
According to him, FRSC rescue teams responded swiftly to the scene, evacuating the injured victims to the Federal Medical Centre, Azare, where they are currently receiving treatment.
The remains of the deceased passengers have been deposited at the morgue pending identification and collection by their families.
Boyi further explained that the corps is maintaining heightened surveillance across major highways in the state under its ongoing Operation Zero Special Patrol, aimed at reducing road traffic crashes during periods of increased travel.
He urged motorists to exercise caution, obey traffic regulations and avoid dangerous driving habits, particularly as roads remain busy with travellers returning to their destinations after the Yuletide and New Year celebrations.
The FRSC reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives on Nigerian roads and warned that violators of traffic rules would face appropriate sanctions.
