The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has identified excessive speed and a wrongful overtaking manoeuvre as the primary causes of a fatal road traffic accident involving world-renowned boxer Anthony Joshua on Monday.
The crash, which occurred at approximately 12:00 PM along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway near the Sinoma area of Sagamu, resulted in the tragic death of two individuals.
FRSC in a statement signed by Assistant Corps Marshal Olusegun Ogungbemide, said preliminary findings from the Ogun Sector Command indicate that the vehicle conveying the boxer—a black Lexus Jeep with registration number KRD 850 HN—was travelling above the legally prescribed speed limit.

The corps added that while attempting to overtake another vehicle, the driver lost control and rammed into a stationary red Sinotruck that was parked properly by the side of the road.
“The primary causes of the crash being excessive speed and wrongful overtaking constitute serious traffic violations and remain among the leading causes of fatal road crashes on Nigerian highways,” the FRSC stated.
FRSC said a total of five adult males were involved in the incident.
The FRSC rescue team from the Sagamu unit arrived at the scene within three minutes of being notified, successfully preventing secondary crashes.
The crash resulted in the deaths of two adult males, who sadly lost their lives at the scene.
Joshua sustained minor injuries and was rescued alive, while one other person was also injured. Two other occupants of the vehicle escaped without physical harm.
The deceased were conveyed to the Livewell Morgue in Ajaka, Sagamu, while the injured were evacuated for immediate medical attention.
The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, expressed his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and wished Anthony Joshua a speedy recovery.

The Nigeria Police Motor Traffic Division (MTD) has been notified and has commenced further investigations into the crash.
