The Presidency of Nigeria has announced that a special session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) will be held on Thursday, 17 July 2025, to honour the life and legacy of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The session, scheduled to commence at 5:00 pm, will be presided over by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who will lead tributes in remembrance of the late statesman.
The development was disclosed on Wednesday via a statement issued by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga on his official X (formerly Twitter) account.
“A special session of the Federal Executive Council in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari will be held on Thursday, 17 July, from 5pm. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will lead the session of tributes for the departed leader,” Onanuga wrote.
The Federal Government had earlier postponed the special FEC session, originally planned for Monday, to allow for the burial arrangements of the former president.
President Muhammadu Buhari passed away on Sunday at the London Clinic, where he had been receiving treatment.
He was laid to rest in a state-wide ceremony in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, on Tuesday, in accordance with Islamic rites.
Buhari served as Nigeria’s Head of State from 1983 to 1985 and returned as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023, completing two terms in office. His presidency was marked by a focus on anti-corruption, infrastructure development, and efforts to combat insurgency in the country’s northeast.
The special FEC session is expected to be attended by current and former members of the cabinet, top government officials, and dignitaries, as the nation continues to mourn a man who played a significant role in shaping Nigeria’s modern political history.
