The Federal Government (FG) has reiterated its commitment to upholding free speech, fostering healthy opposition, and ensuring a thriving media environment as part of its efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, made this declaration on Thursday at the ongoing Ministerial Briefing Session in Abuja.
He emphasised that President Bola Tinubu remains dedicated to protecting constitutionally guaranteed rights and encouraging constructive criticism as a means of deepening democratic governance.
“President Tinubu, as a foremost democrat, is fully committed to protecting the constitutionally guaranteed rights of all Nigerians,” Idris stated.
“He also encourages constructive criticism and healthy opposition because of their essential role in reinforcing and deepening our democratic framework.”
Idris also reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to press freedom, describing a free and responsible press as a crucial pillar of good governance, transparency, and national development.

“This administration believes that a free and responsible press is essential for good governance, transparency, and national development,” he said.
The Minister took the opportunity to congratulate the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) on its 70th anniversary, calling it a milestone that underscores the union’s dedication to press freedom and journalistic excellence.
The event featured briefings from Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, and Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, as part of efforts to keep Nigerians informed about the policies and programmes of the Tinubu administration.
According to Idris, the Ministerial Briefing Session is a platform for government accountability and public engagement, allowing Nigerians direct insight into key policies, initiatives, and reforms.
“This session is a vital opportunity for Honourable Ministers to update Nigerians on the progress and significant milestones achieved under their stewardship.
“Through this interactive forum, enhanced by multimedia channels, we reaffirm our commitment to transparency and public engagement,” he added.
Idris commended Ambassador Tuggar for his efforts in promoting Nigeria’s global image through proactive diplomacy and strategic international engagements.

He also praised Tunji-Ojo for introducing innovative reforms to reposition the Ministry of Interior in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Tinubu.
