The Federal Government (FG) has declared Tuesday, 15 July, a public holiday in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.
According to a statement issued by Magdalene Ajani, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, the declaration follows the approval of President Bola Tinubu and aligns with the seven-day period of national mourning previously announced.

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who made the announcement on behalf of the FG, said the holiday serves as a mark of respect for the late President’s service to the nation.
He highlighted Buhari’s significant contributions to Nigeria’s democratic evolution and his enduring legacy in governance and national development.
“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation.
“This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld,” the Minister said.
He called on citizens to mark the day by honouring the late President’s memory through the promotion of peace, patriotism, and national unity, values the former leader upheld in his vision for a prosperous and united Nigeria.

As previously announced, national flags are to be flown at half-mast throughout the seven-day mourning period, beginning on Sunday, 13th July.
The FG extends its deepest condolences to the late President’s family, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians, while offering prayers for the peaceful repose of his soul.
