The Federal Government is contemplating the termination of Julius Berger Nigeria Plc’s contract for the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano highway project due to ongoing pricing disputes.
The government has urged the construction giant to accept the N740.7 billion allocated by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) to complete the remaining segment of the critical highway.
During a meeting with Julius Berger, represented by Engr. Benjamin Bott, Executive Director of Projects, the Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi emphasized the importance of resolving the matter swiftly. “We have written to the President to approve that if JBN Plc does not accept the N740 billion, we will terminate the contract,” Umahi said, noting that some of the company’s contracts have already been cancelled due to prolonged negotiations.
He further highlighted the government’s commitment to the project, offering fresh mobilization funds if Julius Berger accepts the terms.
“We are ready to pay you, even fresh mobilisation, just to underscore the interest of the President in this project. So, we are appealing and begging you that by Monday, you should be able to sign the addendum to the contract,” Umahi added.
The dispute has lasted over a year, delaying progress on the highway, which is critical for connecting the capital, Abuja, to the northern states.
The government’s firm stance signals an urgency to complete the project without further delays.
