The Federal Government, FG, has announced the cancellation of the Independence Anniversary parade, scheduled for Wednesday, 1 October 2025.
The parade was part of activities to mark Nigeria’s 65th year of independence.

The decision, communicated in a press release by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations, does not diminish the significance of the milestone, with the government reaffirming its commitment to celebrating the occasion with dignity and enthusiasm.
According to Imohiosen, all other programmes planned for the anniversary will proceed as scheduled, ensuring that Nigeria’s 65th independence is commemorated meaningfully.
Imohiosen expressed regret for any inconvenience caused by the cancellation, without specifying reasons for the decision, though sources suggest it aligns with plans for a low-key celebration amid economic challenges.
Imohiosen said FG called for continued support from Nigerians, the diplomatic community, and invited guests, urging unity behind President Bola Tinubu’s reforms aimed at fostering national progress.
“The Government appreciates the understanding, support, and cooperation of all Nigerians and urges them to support the reforms in making Nigeria a greater nation,” Imohiosen stated.
The cancellation follows Tinubu’s working visit to Lagos, where he is engaging private sector leaders and senior officials, and his upcoming trip to Imo on 30 September to commission projects.
